(Biographical) William Stanhope Foster (1790-1839) was born in Weathersfield, Vermont. Following primary school and study in law, he joined the army as a first lieutenant in the Eleventh Infantry in 1812 and was part of the defense of Fort Erie during the War of 1812. In 1822 he married Elizabeth Kilgour of Cincinnati. Foster served as a lieutenant colonel in Florida during the Second Seminole War, where he was responsible for building Fort Foster and Fort Dade.
