Groundwater is the world's largest source of freshwater, providing drinking water for at least half of the world's population. Groundwater is used for various purposes with 70 percent being allocated for agricultural activities. In Indonesia, more than 90 percent of groundwater is extracted from aquifers for domestic use with an estimated extraction of nearly 15 cubic km per year, placing it in as the 9th country with the largest number of groundwater extraction in the world. Dependence on groundwater encourages the development of groundwater science, especially at this time when land use and climate changes have dynamically influenced changes in various processes in the hydrological cycle on a regional and global scale. In addition, challenges to the existence of groundwater, such as population growth and groundwater pollution, are things that need to be considered in regional planning that puts forward the principle of sustainability. Therefore, it requires a comprehensive understanding of groundwater engineering based on the basic principles, applications and modeling of groundwater from the latest references. This book discusses the history and development of groundwater science. An explanation of the hydrogeology of groundwater, including the various types of aquifers and the physical characteristics of the groundwater reservoir is given before the discussion of groundwater hydraulics which describes the energy acting on water, hydraulic height, Darcy's Theorem, basic equations of groundwater flow and groundwater flow principles. Furthermore, analysis on water demand and supply and groundwater potential investigation techniques that address water requirements, pumping test methods on various types of aquifers and groundwater non-exploitation methods before closing with groundwater modeling. Each part includes relevant questions applied to the hydrological and climatological characteristics of Indonesia to assist reader comprehend the situation at field scale.
