BACKGROUND: Wheelchair rugby is a Paralympic sport with recent history and has become an emerging field of study for all areas of physical education. When verifying the research in the area of game analysis, it is noted that, for the most part, offensive and defensive variables are observed, but with the aim of assessing the performance of the functional classes and proposing changes in the classification system of the modality.OBJECTIVE: The study aims to determine the self-organization of the game in wheelchair rugby.METHODS: The sample consisted of 4,679 actions from the Paralympic Games (2016 and 2020), analyzed based on the development of an observation protocol (κ≥0.8). In order to describe the actions developed, the occurrence of the events was accounted for and the chi-square test was applied. The performance of the functional classes was measured with the application of the Kruskal Wallis H test. To compare the performance of the functional classes of the top and bottom teams, the factors that influence the final result of the match and the Paralympic Games, the Mann Whitney U test was applied. The characterization of the block actions was done with the application of repeated measures ANOVA, in addition to the use of the Student’s t-test to compare the actions with and without block.RESULTS: The game is governed by actions that result in a point and the high functional classes (3.0-3.5) have greater participation in the offensive and defensive phases. The performance of functional class 1.5 was superior to that of functional class 3.0 in the lower teams. The performance of the functional class 3.0 is decisive to explain the success of the teams in the competition. Defensive blocking actions are important to regain possession of the ball without conceding points.CONCLUSION: Rugby is governed by actions that result in points, and these are mostly performed by the upper functional classes (3.0 and 3.5).
