To understand the complexity of Mexico’s relations with its two main trading partners, the United States and China, the analysis takes three directions: the level of competitiveness of the Mexican economy vis-à-vis both countries; the type of trade insertion between the three countries, and the extent to which trade flows from Mexico to them match or move away from the theoretical predictions of the Heckscher-Ohlin model, based on complementary trade. Three empirical instruments are used as we move from the traditional theory to a new theory of international trade: bilateral trade intensity indices; the bilateral indices of revealed comparative advantage, and the degree of integration of the industries, based on the Grubel and Lloyd index. The findings regarding the United States show a high level of integration reflected in the amount of the bilateral trade and the value of the Grubel and Lloyd index, both revitalized after the Covid-19 pandemic. With China, trade intensity is observed only in the China-Mexico direction, and the Grubel and Lloyd index, which had been growing steadily from very low levels, gets back after the pandemic. This on the one hand reflects a traditional Heckscher-Ohlin pattern of trade and, on the other, some possible effects of the trade restrictions imposed by the United States. ; Para comprender la complejidad de las relaciones de México con sus dos principales socios comerciales, Estados Unidos y China, se trabaja en tres direcciones: el nivel de competitividad de la economía mexicana frente a ambas; el tipo de inserción comercial de los tres países, y la medida en que los flujos comerciales de México hacia ellos se ajustan o alejan de las predicciones teóricas del modelo complementarista Heckscher-Ohlin.
