Leningrad, Russia ; In this oral history interview, Mr. Plotkin disucsses his family's emigration from Leningrad via Vienna and Rome to Seattle. He tells about the advancement of his family from a JFS-supplied tiny apartment to a large house in Mountlake Terrace. He discusses his feelings about not having help to stay in his field of anthropology in Academia, about his feelings about his children's public school education (2 daughters - age 10 & 7), about his own personal struggle to define himself as a Jew ( as an atheist), about the attitude of some of the other Russian Jews whose children go to one of the Jewish schools, about his brother-in-law's much more warm experience toward the Jewish community in being settled in Tacoma, about the difference in resettlement problems between Jews from Russia's urban cities (Moscow and Leningrad) as compared to those from the Baltic (Lithuania and Latvia) and Balkan (cities now Russian that were Russian and Hungarian) regions of Russia. He tells about the warm reception the Russian Jews had from Chabad. He ends with telling about the demonstration some of the Russian Jews organized today to hand out flyers of information to the Russian Government Minister of Sports who was here in Seattle to meet with the Goodwill Games Committee about the next international games which are going to be in Seattle.
