الوصف: Two enrolled specimens of the phillipsiid trilobite genus Ameura from a single Atokan horizon low in the Minturn Formation at Bond, Colorado preserve details of holochroal eye structure. Ameura cf. A. missouriensis (Shumard, 1858) shows each individual facet to internally contain eight or more circular structures surrounding a single, central hollow. We interpret these structures to be remnants of receptor cells, thus revealling the internal structure of an apposition eye. The diameters and spacing of facets in the holotype of A. bondi Hughes in Hughes et al . 2024 suggest a diurnally active lifestyle in shallow subaqueous conditions. The eyes apparently could have facilitated the generation of finely resolved images even in somewhat reduced light conditions. These functional conclusions based on eye morphology are consistent with sedimentological evidence for shallow but episodically turbid water conditions during deposition of this part of the Minturn Formation. It also accords with functional inferences derived from morphological characteristics related to enrolment, as well as from the nature of other biota found at the same horizon.
