| الوصف: | El objetivo de este artículo es reflexionar, a partir de la bibliografía disponible, sobre el papel de las materias primas –la lana y el algodón, especialmente– en el fracaso de las primeras iniciativas fabriles en los inicios del proceso industrializador en Andalucía a finales del siglo XVIII. Disponiendo de lanas de alta calidad y siendo Cádiz el puerto receptor de todo el algodón americano que llegaba a España, la pregunta que se formula en este trabajo es por qué las empresas textiles que se crearon en Andalucía no tuvieron el éxito que cabía esperar o fueron directamente un fracaso. Las respuestas apuntan, en el caso de la industria pañera, a la masiva exportación de lanas al extranjero, que se vio favorecida desde las instituciones por razones fiscales. Y, en el de la industria algodonera, al elevado precio y la escasa calidad del algodón americano a su llegada a Cádiz, causado por el coste de los fletes, el tipo de cambio monetario y la falta de preparación técnica –despepitado– en origen. The aim of this article is to explore, using bibliographic sources, the role played by raw materials – wool and cotton, mainly – in the failure of the first steps of the Andalucia industrialisation process at the end of the 18th century. Andalucia having access to high quality wool and Cadiz being the arrival port in Spain of raw cotton coming from America, the question that emerges is why did the textile factories created in this region have not success? Concerning the wool industry, we can find the answer for its decline in the massive exports favoured by the government for fiscal reasons. In the case of the cotton industry, the reason for the lack of success came from the high prices of American raw cotton in Cadiz due to the high transport costs and a disadvantageous exchange rate, and its low quality coming from a lack of technical preparation. |
