The resort town Pattaya in Thailand is known as the sex capital of the world. This thesisexamines how Pattaya’s sexscape is constructed as space and place by male sex tourists andhow this space offers them possibilities in terms of acting out orientalist fantasies whileconsuming and conquering the landscape and the local women.We view Pattaya as a product of increased global mobility in a context of orientalistrepresentations and global inequality. Drawing on theory about time, space and place as wellas theory on (uneven) mobilities and intimate mobilities we demonstrate how the mobility ofpeople, representations and imaginations create Pattaya as an exotic and erotic sex touristdestination. The empirical data is based on digital ethnographic fieldwork conducted inPattaya and on online sex tourist forums.We found that Pattaya is constructed as a feminized place out of time and place wheremale sex tourists can escape their daily lives and have their desires fulfilled by the locals whothey in turn construct as erotic and exotic. It is therefore not only the encounter with the otherthat is central for sex tourist’s construction of gender, but also the imaginative geography ofthe sexscape where gender, race, mobility and economic power intersect. The labor andagency of the local women working in the sexscape becomes invisible when these women areunderstood as passive and submissive. Instead, their labor should be seen as a way of caringfor their families and creating a better future. Therefore, we suggest the term intimacyscapesince it encapsulates different motivations for moving to Pattaya such as love, fear, hope,desire, intimacy, family and sex.
