This paper designs an automatic contour detection system of open arc welding workpiece. The realization of the device is the first step to achieve automatic control system of welding processes. Firstly it summarizes the difficulties must be solved in the design of detection system. According to the requirements, an electromechanical system is designed. The performance has been analyzed by simulation .An experiment has been done to verify the prototype. The results show the design meets the requirements.
