Psychological science has thrived thanks to new methods and innovative practices. Journals, including Behavior Research Methods (BRM) continue to support the dissemination and evaluation of research assets including data, software/hardware, statistical code, and databases of stimuli. However, ensuring that research assets will function for a long time is rarely easy and while psychological research to date has focused on data sharing, this alone is often not enough to ensure computational reproducibility. Therefore, we will explore how BRM’s authors and BRM structures shape the landscape of functional research assets. Our broad research questions concern: (1) How quickly can methods and analytical techniques reported in BRM be used and developed further by other scientists; (2) How have methods, and what assets that have been reported on, changed over time following changes to journal policy, and (3) Can we disentangle such policy changes from reduced usability over time. Specifically, have changes to policy resulted in methods and materials being useful for longer? We will randomly sample 100 papers before and after changes to journal policy (N=200). A researcher will then record how long it takes to ensure assets are fully operational. They will also code for completeness and reusability of all assets. Documenting the functionality and sustainability of research assets associated with articles over time also has a broader, forward-facing objective. By describing the landscape of (different types of) research products in psychology, we seek evidence for developing practical recommendations. This will support journals and researchers today and in the future. |
