Perhaps the only thing more amazing than their defeat of so many powerful neighbors was their ability to maintain their status and keep the empire together. Their rule was as unlikely as their rise. The Mongol approach to governance was unique in history: unlike so many other imperial powers, Genghis and his successors did not seek to remake the societies they overran. They had no interest in “civilizing” other people, or uplifting or Mongolizing. Instead, they followed the opposite path, remaking themselves in order to maintain power. This did not sit well with the more conservative elements among them, and the empire eventually tore itself apart. |
