Alcoa Kitts Green has identified rolling longer plate as a key step to increase the capacity of hot mills. The two most problematic issues for rolling longer plates are: (1) to identify accurately the availability of power, and (2) to improve the rolled shape quality, e.g., reduce “banana-ing”. Models were developed to calculate the available power and a new tilt control formula was developed to deal with the issue of banana-ing. Trials were successfully completed to test the capability with increased rolling length. A 36% increase in hot mill capacity was achieved.
