الوصف: Low flammable plant species in the New Caledonian traditional societies can help in lowering the risk of wildfires in certain climates. Due to climate change, there has been an intensification of drought periods leading to significant fire risk. A tree called Bourao in New Caledonia has been blocking the fires and helping to contain their radius. This can be a natural solution to the issues facing the area with 2% of their country being burned by human fires each year. Recently local communities have undertaken reforestation projects but do not take into consideration the flammability of the plant species being used. Using Bourao strategically can be a natural and beneficial way to control wildfires due to the tree being fire retardant and having multiple traditional uses for the communities around them. This can create easy to perform and cheap community projects to help support fire risk mitigation.
