Flow-electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI) is a relatively young technology, which is promising for the desalination of and salt recovery from aqueous solutions with a wide range of salinities. FCDI is related to electrodialysis and capacitive deionization processes, and profits from existing literature and ongoing research regarding these technologies. However, the combination of ion-exchange membranes with capacitive flow electrodes, also termed slurry electrodes, leads to complex interactions and especially the physico-chemical mechanisms within capacitive flow electrodes are not yet fully understood. This thesis discusses the state of the art of FCDI and related technologies and, based on this, presents experimental and theoretical studies, which advance the field of FCDI. Topics investigated in this thesis range from the investigation of (1) fundamental mechanisms, such as the charge transfer in carbon flow electrodes, over the (2) module and process design, culminating in the presentation of (3) a newly developed, improved process model, which can facilitate the further advancement of FCDI processes on all scales from membrane materials to system design. The overall focus of this thesis lies on the application of FCDI for the treatment of high salinity solutions.
