الوصف: This chapter aims to provide a practical guide and commentary on automation of sample preparation techniques prior to introduction to gas chromatography. Significant gains have been realized over the last decade in automating many aspects of sample preparation. This has been spurred by both the introduction of new automated and robotic sample preparation and introduction systems and the general trend of miniaturization in sample preparation, which has simplified automated processing. In many cases, newer technologies have been brought to market through collaborative efforts between instrument and consumables companies, academic researchers, and end users. While many of the research-level breakthroughs have been well reported in the open literature, reviews of the efforts in hyphenating these processes to separation and detection systems are poorly covered there. This article aims to bridge that chasm by reviewing the many new options for automated sample preparation in light of their benefits and limitations for a wide variety of applications in chemical analysis.
