مستخلص: |
The article discusses a study which identified and characterized an elastolytic protease in Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), a fungus that causes chytridiomycosis in amphibians. It notes that animals infected with Bd experience hyperkeratosis and sloughing of the epidermis due to penetration of the keratinized tissues by the fungus, and these symptoms have led the study to theorizes that Bd produces proteases that play a role in the infection process. The study showed that Bd is capable of degrading elastin in vitro, a protein in the extracellular matrix of the host animal. Details related to the experiment are included. |
