This photo-essay examines four industrial architectural structures built during the middle of the 20th century, including the recently collapsed Interstate 35W bridge in Minneapolis. The analysis of these structures is a narrative, reflecting on their forms and functions. Interwoven with this narrative is an evaluation of Modernism as an ideology within the American cultural "tool kit" (Swidler, 1986, p.273). The purpose of this discussion is to consider some of the issues faced by today's culture in light of the deterioration of Modernism's objects of progress (Fernie, 1995). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
