We demonstrate the synthesis of a chalcogenide (∼Ge30Sb10S60) glass, suitable as a standard for laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analysis of platinum group elements (PGEs), chalcogens (Se, As, Te, Sb, and Bi), transition metals (Co, Fe, Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, and Zn), and other elements (Mo, W, Sn, Pb, and Ga). The synthesis was accomplished by subjecting the sample, vacuum sealed in a fused silica ampoule, to melting (Tmax of 950°–975°C) then quenching over a total period of ~30 h. The method allows for the synthesis of a relatively large sample (∼10 g, in this report) of homogeneous glass with good laser coupling characteristics. Doped concentrations were ∼100 μg/g for most elements, except for Ru, Os, Re, W, and Mo, which were homogeneous only when added at the 5- to 10-μg/g level. The trace element homogeneity of the glasses was verified by LA-ICP-MS, and the absolute concentrations were determined using both solution and LA-ICP-MS. Accuracy of the chalcogenide glass as a standard to measure other matrices was verified by analyses of silicate and sulfide reference materials, with results in accord with accepted values for most of the elements considered.
