Abstract (English): |
The fourth state power, media, has always had a major influence on the public. Sometimes this impact was decisively in shaping public opinion. For example, in both countries - where press freedom and also the freedom of speech were self- evident and have a long tradition, but also in countries where liberty of expression is a relatively new phenomenon, the public has been influenced by the power of information. This influences went from the broadcasting of shocking news through sending information that led to major state decisions - media always marked individual's opinions. In fact, an accurate and well documented information arouses all the time reactions although the effects on the public can be strong, limited or weak. We live in a society that depends on information and communication and in most of the countries, people put trust on the media as an authority to give us news, education and a lot of entertainment. Media has an important impact not only on society, but also on public opinion. And from all forms of communication, television is nowdays the most popular channel for communication and for inducing opinions in people's minds. Tv channels have now a very important role in shaping the personality of people, but not only in a pozitive way. Mass-meda can also play a negative role by making people believe that the way in which a country is going is not a good way. Using as example the main three theories of mass communication (the theory of weak effects, the theory of limited effects and the theory of strong effects), this paper is going to present how mass media influenced the current street protest in Romania's major cities. It all started from a simple information in the press, but was later maintained and handled by the national mass communication channels. This situation is typical for the exercise of media influence on subtle ways with the main goal of getting the desired effect: to continue and enhance the protests which can influence the countries change of leadership. In this case, the mass protests started just from some information in the press regarding the conflict between the Romanian president Traian Basescu and Raed Arafat, secretary in Minsitry of Health. The issue was a package of laws on health and then Arafat's letter of resignation. Even if the conflict was resolved in a few days, mainstream media continued to promote this "new revolution" in Romania, often beyond the boundaries of ethics through direct involvement and subjective incentives. The result is that, encouraged by the media, the street protests continued in Romania, often degenerating in violence. Of course, most of the news channels allocated prime time on the subject. I discuss finally how the Internet, online media, social networks, blogs and journalists personal pages had influenced the Romanian public. This research wants to demonstrate the major role of mass-media in our society, the fact that press is still a power in modelating people's mind and actions, using the theories about effects of mass communication and also monitoring and analyzing national media channels during January 2012. Abstract (French): |
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
