The author reports a study by A. Fukai and colleagues on the lack of chondroprotection by specific cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) inhibition in surgically induced osteoarthritis (OA) mice models. The study concluded that treatment with COX-2 inhibitor did not affect histopathologic severity scores for cartilage damage and osteophyte formation. It is suggested that the study will stimulate discussion on the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), in particular COX-2 inhibitors, in OA. |
