Abstract (English): In order to search for the distribution and differences of diatoms and other eukaryotic microplanktons at discrepant locations in the same water area so as to provide a basis for both diagnosis about drowning and inference of drowning site, we randomly selected 4 equidistant water intake points (W1, W2, W3 and W4) in the Pearl River (Guangzhou section) to collect water samples having 18S rDNA sequenced to analyze qualitatively and quantitatively those diatoms and other eukaryotic microplanktons at each water-collecting site. It was found that the average number of species of eukaryotic microplanktons including diatoms was 483.73±39.06, and the number of species in the discrepant water sampling locations was remarkably different. Meanwhile, there were significant differences among the eukaryotic microplanktons from discrepant water sampling locations. Specific diatoms were found in W1 and W4, showing Fragilaria in W1 and in W4 as Coscinodiscus, Cylindrotheca and Luticola. Moreover, Analysis revealed that all the sampling locations had their specifi c species at the species level, with W4 harboring the most amount of specifi c species totalling to 98 ones. These fi ndings suggest that the distribution and differences of the eukaryotic microplanktonic communities at different locations in the Pearl River (Guangzhou section) can be used for the inference of related death cause and drowning site. Moreover, the specifi c species at different locations in the Pearl River can provide a new insight into inference of drowning site. The eukaryotic microplanktonic communities distribute their involving species discrepantly at different locations in Guangzhou section of the Pearl River, enabling a reference and inference about related death cause and drowning site, and also establishment of the database of eukaryotic microplanktons in the Pearl River. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
