مستخلص: This article reports that it has been firmly established that protective immunity against non-invasive enteric pathogens, whether bacterial or viral, is mediated by specific antibody present within the gut. Currently, this local immunity can only be assessed in humans by removal of a sample of the secretions from the small bowel. This is impractical for most purposes. Field studies in Bangladesh showed that there was an age-related decrease in cholera case-rate and an increase in serum vibriocidal titre.
