This article focuses on the violence in New Haven, Connecticut despite the progress made towards urbanization under the leadership of Mayor Richard C. Lee. With the single-mindedness of a visionary, Lee has transformed New Haven's inner city from an aging slum into a futuristic landscape of poured concrete and high steel. Now Richard Lee is in trouble. On August 19, 1967, the city's black pockets erupted. Fires, looting and rage swept New Haven. Lee called upon state police and alerted National Guardsmen in an effort to contain the rioters. The violence lasted four days and was longer and more destructive than the summer riots in any city of comparable size. |
