Objectives. The aim of the paper is to investigate the nature and evolution of the false positive diagnostics at the FT extended scan protocol. Materials and methods. We studied the evolution of the FT false results in our center during a four-year' time interval. Only the patients with extended first and second trimester anomaly scan and complete follow-up were considered. The causes and evolution of the initial false diagnostics were analyzed. We used as controls the secondary experienced team evaluation, follow-up scans, pathologic evaluations and neonatal evaluations. Results. 2577 pregnant women fulfilled the study requirements. The prevalence of lethal and severe malformations was calculated 1.4% (36 cases) and the FT scan identified 77.77% (28) of major structural defects. The overall detection rate from the first year presented a slight increase in the following years (5%) but the false negative results markedly decreased with approximately 25%. Conclusions. Examination of the fetal morphology in the first trimester is feasible and has demonstrated its effectiveness in terms of major anomalies' detection. The pitfalls of the first trimester morphological evaluation are decreased by the experience of the examiners and the completion of the investigation protocol. Pathological assessment is a useful audit tool even in the first trimester [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
