Chromated copper arsenate (CCA) continues to be widely used to preserve wood for industrial use worldwide. To date, however, research has not yielded commercially successful methods of recycling spent treated wood. Understanding the distribution of CCA in decommissioned treated wood would be beneficial to the recycling of treated wood for laminated products. This study investigated the distribution of total CCA retention as well as retention of the three components of CCA (i.e., CrO3, CuO, and As2O5) both across and along 12 decommissioned utility poles. Total CCA retention, as well as retention for each of the three components of CCA, decreased in a curvilinear fashion from the outside to the pith of each of the 12 decommissioned poles. Interesting patterns were discovered in the retention percentages of the three CCA components: CrO3 retention as a percentage of total CCA retention decreased, while As2O5 and CuO retention percentages increased from the outside to the pith of the poles. For the complete poles used in this study, total CCA retention and retention for each of the three CCA components decreased from the top of the pole to about the groundline in the outermost assay zone (25.4 mm [1 in]). In the deeper assay zones, CCA retention varied according to different patterns from the top to the groundline. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
