| مستخلص: | First-quarter winners continue to be those companies with strong new product flows, such as Boston Scientific, Medtronic and Guidant. Estimates have been cut recently for St. Jude, Allergan, Health Systems, Ventritex, Sierra and Coventry, and not raised for anyone except Guidant due to negative currency comparisons. Our preferred stocks would be: Boston Scientific, Medtronic, Guidant, and Baxter among medical suppliers; Columbia/HCA among providers; PBMs/PPMs such as MedPartners; and the top-tier HMOs, particularly Aetna and United, as well as NY HMOs such as Oxford and California HMOs such as PacifiCare, Health Systems and WellPoint. Near-term quarterly EPS growth standouts include Oxford (60%), Guidant (45%), MedPartners (40%), PhyCor (40%), and Boston Scientific (35%). Near-term industrial standouts: MedPartners due to the successful Caremark integration, Aetna for the U.S. Healthcare acquisition, Oxford for NYC share gains, PacifiCare for the FHP acquisition, and United for 1998 upward EPS surprise potential.
