We propose a practical tool for managers to identify state-of-the-art technological and industry trends using commonly available resources. We also present the theoretical founding and pilot implementation. It employs a systematic multi-method approach combining quantitative analysis and qualitative expert insights that leverage public data for patents, publications, academic citations, and trending data from professional databases in a process augmented with standard AI technologies (ChatGPT and Statista AI). The tool was designed for simplicity, clear visualization of results, and easy adoption with frugal resources. The tool was piloted in the working machines industry and validated with the Finnish Intelligent Machines Association, representing 30+ organizations on the market. The tool supports organizations and practically adopts the planning and operation elements of the ISO 56001:2024 innovation management system by helping align innovation objectives with the organization's strategy, relevant trends and technologies, and in supporting operational opportunity, need identification and effective concept/solution development.
