مستخلص: The founding assumption of this study is that the lived experiences of culture, and the impact that it has on individuals in the workplace, is neither as simple nor as linear as explained by extant literature. In light of this, the purpose of this study is to complicate culture, by exploring the extent to which the lived experiences of eight individual cultural constructs deviated from the known literature. In this first part of the twopart series, the eight cultural orientations, namely, Action, Communication, Competition, Individualism, Power, Space, Structure and Time, are briefly viewed through the lenses of established extant literature. The phenomenological qualitative approach is explained, as this is used to allow individuals' narratives to shed light on the nuances that formal theory might have missed. In the follow-up paper (Part II), we will highlight how the research data from semi-structured interviews are used to explore the extent to which these cultural orientations remain as impediments to individual effectiveness in the workplace.
