Silica sol is a high-performance nanomaterial widely used, and its synthesis methods mainly include ion exchange method, electrolytic electrodialysis method, dispersion method, etc. However, the performance of silica sol synthesized by different methods varies. In order to improve its drawbacks, it is often necessary to modify the silica sol, and common modification methods are mainly divided into physical modification and chemical modification. In this article, the synthesis methods, modification methods, and modified properties of silica sol were summarized, and its application in the field of wood was examined. The focus is on the relevant research on improving the mechanical properties and flame retardancy of wood. Finally, the development of silica sol in the field of wood was discussed.
