In this scientific endeavour, the minimum wage is discussed, including its effects and implications on the labour market. The minimum wage has been a concern not only for researchers but also for policy makers in government institutions. The minimum wage is also a concern of the European Union, which opts for adequate minimum wages at Member State level that cover the needs of the employee and reduce the poverty level of the employee. The minimum wage also has implications for employment levels, as higher national or sectoral minimum wages make jobs more attractive and lead to sustainable employment. In order to analyse the minimum wage at national level and by field of activity in the Republic of Moldova, data provided by the National Bureau of Statistics were used. The results of the investigations showed clear discrepancies between the minimum wage and the average gross monthly wage in several fields of activity. In many areas of activity, the share of employees whose average gross monthly wage is close to the minimum wage exceeds 30%, and in some fields of the economy - even 50%, which increases the vulnerability of these employees [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
