The article discusses how artificial intelligence (AI) is being used to discover new antibiotics in order to combat antimicrobial resistance. AI algorithms are able to quickly analyze large amounts of data and identify potential drug candidates, including those derived from extinct organisms like the woolly mammoth. Some of these compounds have shown promise in treating infections in mice. However, there are challenges in developing new antibiotics, such as the rapid evolution of bacteria and the lack of financial incentives for pharmaceutical companies. Without new solutions, drug-resistant bacterial infections could cause millions of deaths by 2050. [Extracted from the article] |
