مستخلص: |
The flexible workforce presently accounts for between a third and a half of the total Great Britain workforce. The prospect of widespread skill shortages in the 1990s is increasingly forcing employers to re-evaluate the role and status of these atypical workers. A new book published in September 1989 reassesses the role of such new work patterns in a labour market where demand for skilled labour greatly exceeds the supply. The authors of "New Work Patterns: Putting Policy into Practice," by Patricia Leighton and Michel Syrett, argue that part time, temporary and contract staff should and will increasingly be used in specific activities of the firm and they examine the far reaching implications that this will have for every aspect of internal personnel and organisational structure. The book suggests ways in which employing organisations can evaluate their own needs for a more flexible workforce and challenge many of the long held myths surrounding their use in organisations. It also focuses on the nature and needs of the workers themselves and argues that these are frequently ignored or unmet by many traditional employers. |
