The article presents literary criticism of the book "Poor Folk" by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Particular focus is given to the relationship between the characters Varenka Dobroselova and Makar Devushkin. It is suggested that, contrary to some scholarly interpretations, Dobroselova sees Devushkin as a legitimate suitor and develops genuine romantic feelings for him over the course of the novel. Topics discussed include sentiment, the Natural School of Russian literature, and misinterpretation. |
