The article looks at representations of the experience of lesbian and gay African Americans in the film "Pariah" written and directed by Dee Rees and produced by Nekisa Cooper and the play "Sweet Tea" written by E. Patrick Johnson. "Pariah" follows a young lesbian poet as she comes out to her family, while "Sweet Tea" depicts African American gay men in the South. Details on the roles of family, religion, and homophobia in the lives of lesbian and gay African Americans are also presented. |
