The article discusses two scandals which occurred at the end of the 19th century, the Dreyfus Affair and the criminal case against English author Oscar Wilde for homosexual activities. The Dreyfus Affair centered around the treason charges brought against Jewish French Army Captain Alfred Dreyfus for selling military secrets to the Germans and the subsequent trial. French author Emile Zola wrote an open letter criticizing the trial proceedings and Dreyfus' guilty verdict titled "J'Accuse!," which resulted in a trial for criminal libel against Zola. |
