The article discusses Islamic ethics and psychological aspects of secrecy. An analysis of "Kitab Kitman al-Sirr wa-Hifz al-Lisan," a book about concealing secrets by ninth-century Abbasid writer and theologian al-Jahiz, is presented. Topics include the inclination toward secrecy in terms of human subjectivity and identity, the Koran's concept of self-hood in relation to the concealment and revelation of one's self through speech, the mystical perspective on developing an ideal self that is moral and ethical, and the definitions of the words "secret" and "secrecy" that are found in al-Jahiz's writings. |
