In this article the author examines aspects of the motion picture "Come and See," directed by the Russian filmmaker Elem Klimov. It is noted that the film is one of the last motion pictures of quality to have been produced during the Soviet era. The motion picture, which deals with Nazi atrocities committed in Byelorussia as observed through the eyes of a teen-aged boy, is compared to the historical filmmaking of Sergei Eisenstein. The author recaps the history of the depiction of the Second World War in Soviet cinema. The notion that parts of the film are autobiographical is discussed. |
