مستخلص: |
Effect of non-magnetic yttrium substitution at Gd-site of rare earth intermetallic compound GdNi (orthorhombic, CrB-type) on the crystal structure and magnetism has been studied. The samples Gd1-xYxNi (x = 0, 0.5, 0.75 and 1) were prepared by electric arc-melting. Powder X-ray diffraction studies on the compounds Gd1-xYxNi with x = 0.5 and 0.75 reveal an orthorhombic crystal structure (FeB-type, space group Pnma, no. 62). From dc magnetization data, it is found that the samples order ferromagnetically around 62 K and 22 K respectively. The end member YNi also has the same FeB-type structure at room temperature but it is a Pauli paramagnet. The trend of change in the TC and saturation magnetization values with increase in Y content suggest that Ni may play a subtle role in the magnetism of these compounds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
