This article discusses the efforts of Karen Nickel and Dawn Chapman to clean up radioactive waste near their suburban St. Louis neighborhood in Missouri. The waste is a result of atomic waste storage in the region after World War II, with some radioactive material mixing with a local creek and accumulating at the West Lake Landfill.
