Negative stereotypes about aging, known as ageism, are pervasive in society and have detrimental effects on both individuals and society as a whole. These stereotypes affect the lives of older people, limiting their opportunities and medical treatment. However, research has shown that ageism also negatively impacts the individuals who hold these stereotypes, affecting their physical and mental health, memory function, and even their lifespan. These stereotypes begin early in life and are reinforced by media, language, and cultural narratives. Challenging ageist stereotypes and promoting positive attitudes towards aging can lead to longer, healthier lives for individuals and a more inclusive society. [Extracted from the article] |
