The article comments on the book "Symbiosis or Parasitism: Ethics and Practice in the Social System of Sociology." The book documents in immense detail, with a full apparatus of footnotes to archival materials, the course of the collaborative relationship between the professors Hans Gerth and C. Wright Mills and uses this as the occasion for some reflections on the ethical issues of academic life which it raises, and for some commentary on the nature of the social setting in which it took place. Mills had from his early twenties formed the intention of making a career in academia, and showed even then a striking sense of strategies instrumentally appropriate to that end. Mills collaborated with Gerth on some articles and on two books, "From Max Weber" and "Character and Social Structure," both were well received and extremely successful. The collaboration started when Mills was a doctoral student at Wisconsin, where Gerth was on the faculty. There were also some ethical issues of other kinds raised in the negotiations over the publication of the joint books. |
