This chapter highlights some of the key aspects of Catherine Bell’s work employed by the contributors to this volume. The first section focuses on questions of ritual theorizing and assumptions we make as scholars. In particular, we wrestle with our assertions about what counts as data and our assumptions and understanding of the relationships between text and practice. Second, we discuss the complicated spectrum of activities identified as ritual, ritualization, ritual-like, and non-ritual. Finally, we engage the various ways the contributors wrestle with Bell’s understanding of ritual as strategic practice affected by and effecting power dynamics. |
