الوصف: | International audience ; The objective of this preliminary study was to compare the GRF, hoof deceleration and velocity at impact of the fore (F) and hind (H) limbs in 2 horses at canter, to raise insights into the mechanisms of injuries. The horses right fore and hind hooves were equipped with a 3D dynamometric horseshoe and an accelerometer, and reflective markers. Each horse cantering at 30 km/h on a synthetic sand track was filmed with two high-speed cameras. All measurements were synchronized. Trailing F and H had a major propulsive action, whereas leading limbs were predominantly breaking. Whereas maximal vertical force (18% higher in the F vs. H) was significantly higher in the trailing vs. leading F, it was the opposite in H. Horizontal hoof velocity was significantly higher in H vs. F, and in trailing vs. leading limbs. The differences were opposite for vertical velocity (higher in F vs. H, and leading vs. trailing). The vertical impact shock was also significantly higher in the leading vs. trailing limbs, but not significantly different between F and H. This result enhances the major role of maximal vertical forces at mid-stance (vs. impact shock) in the occurrence of injuries (more frequent in the distal F) in athletic horses. |
