الوصف: | The development of seagrass is determined by several factors that can stimulate or delay their growth. Changes in plant morphology and anatomy are adaptation strategies of plants, in the face of environmental variations. The morphology and anatomy of Thalassia testudinum were compared in areas with different environmental conditions to characterize Cuban populations: Lanzanillo-Pajonal-Fragoso, Rincón de Guanabo, Península de Guanahacabibes and Jardines de la Reina. 20 shots were randomly collected throughout the meadow to measure leaf dimensions and 15 shots were to make cross-transverse sections at the base of the vertical rhizome for subsequent tissue measurement. Leaf area, root length, and thickness of the rhizome tissue sections were compared between the stations. The higher values obtained in the foliar area and the root length, the proportion of aerenchyma, and the diameter of the central cylinder, correspond to the angiosperms located in the localities with the lowest anthropic impact. The organic matter caused by eutrophication and the hydrodynamics generated by waves can impact the morphology and anatomy of marine angiosperms. Detection of differential growing among plants of different locations constitutes the departure point to identify the impact of environmental conditions in Cuban seagrass beds and conservation priority areas. These results contribute to the management and conservation of this ecological and economically important ecosystem.
