الوصف: | In this November 2012 interview, MAJ Matthew Lee, US Army, Infantry discusses his deployment to Iraq the company commander for Bravo Company, 2-22 Infantry "Triple Deuce" from 2007 to 2008 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). MAJ Lee talks about his missions of securing his AO with the Iraqi Security Forces in order to help restore essential services and legitimize the Government. He describes how he was in a true COIN (counterinsurgency) environment. MAJ Lee talks about building a patrol base from scratch and then transitioning it to the Iraq Army as he left the area. He discusses some challenges he faced transitioning his unit from a very kinetic fight to a more COIN environment. MAJ Morris closes his interview by stating, "I think, one lesson I took away is the cultural understanding piece has got to be trained constantly. No matter who you are, if you are a unit that could deploy anywhere at any time, you have got to put cultural awareness training up there at the top with the rest of your core competencies to succeed, because I don't really see another conflict that the Army is going to be involved in that is not going to be dealing with some sort of population or group of people. I think the cultural understanding is a key part in succeeding." |
