الوصف: | SolarExtremely LargeTelescopes(ELTs) enable diffraction limited imaging ofthebasic physical structure ofthesolaratmosphere. Magneto-hydrodynamic considerations limit their size to about 0.03 arcsec. To observe them inthenear-infrared 8-meter classtelescopesare needed.TheChineseGiantSolarTelescope, or CGST, is such a near-infraredsolarELT. It is a RingTelescopewith an 8-meter outer diameter and a central clear aperture of about 6-meter diameter. At present various optionsforsuch a Gregorian typetelescopeare under study, like a continuous ring made out of segments or a multiple aperture ring made of 6 or 7 off-axistelescopes.Theadvantages of such a ringtelescopeis that its MTF covers all spatial frequencies out to those corresponding to its outer diameter, that its circular symmetry makes it polarization neutral, and that its large central hole helps thermal control while it provides ample spaceforMCAO and Gregorian focus instrumentation. We presentthecurrent status ofthedesign oftheCGST. Our thinking is guided bytheoutstanding performance ofthe1-meter vacuumsolartelescopeoftheYunnanSolarObservatory which liketheCGST uses both AO and image reconstruction. Using it with a ring-shape aperture masktheimaging techniquesfortheCGST are being explored.TheCGST will have Multi-ConjugateAdaptiveOptics(MCAO).Thepeculiarities of Atmospheric Wavefront TomographyforRingTelescopesare aided bytheample availability of guide stars ontheSun. IR MCAO-aided diffraction limited imaging offerstheadvantage of a large FOV, and highsolarmagnetic field sensitivity. Site testing is proceeding in western China (e.g. northern Yunnan Province and Tibet).TheCGST is aChinesesolarcommunity project originated bytheYunnan Observatory, theNational Astronomical Observatories, thePurple Mountain Observatory, theNanjing University, theNanjing Institute of AstronomicalOpticsand Technology andtheBeijing Normal University. |
