Metradramatic procedures and language in Thyestes’ prologue (vv. 1-121)The aim of this paper is a textual-philological analysis of the dialogue between the Fury and Tantalus in the prologue to Seneca's Thyestes (vv. 1-121), whose configuration has programmatic characteristics with regard to the rest of the tragedy. Insofar as the dialogue is placed in a border or paratextual place, our analysis will focus on the use of metadramatic procedures and language. We will also examine to what extent they provide us with hints that are useful to understanding some aspects of Seneca's tragic poetics. In order to establish a connection between Thyestes' metadramatic features and Senecan tragic poetics, we will also take into consideration Epistulae XXXIII, LXXIX and LXXXIV, where Seneca puts forward his theory of the reception and appropriation of texts.Key words: Seneca, Thyestes, metadrama, furor, authorial poetics. |
