They sanction the fulfilment of a vow subscribed in a situation of sickness or accident, as evidenced by the continual association of these ex-votos with other anatomical offerings, in the same archaeological assemblages; it would be wrong to arbitrarily extract one of the categories of the assemblage to give it a different meaning. In addition, rare ex-votos refer to a care of the lower limbs, like the feet with sponge (Alesia and Sources Seine); in Roman Egypt, Isidoros' ex-voto in the form of a foot expressly refers to a chariot accident. Conversely, there is no connection between the sculptures representing lower limbs and the fulfilment of vows pro itu and reditu for the happy outcome of a trip. Footprint images sometimes associated with such vows are an entirely different category of representations. |
