الوصف: The aim of the study was to determine the incidence of Helicobacter pylori infection in an unselected obstetric population and investigate its role in causing gastrointestinal upset. Four hundred and sixteen patients were recruited to the trial. H. pylori infection was determined at booking (10–14 week’ gestation). Dyspeptic symptoms were recorded using a validated questionnaire (the Glasgow Dyspepsia Severity Score). Dyspepsia scores were determined at booking and at 30 weeks’ gestation. Forty-one per cent of patients were infected with H. pylori. Seventy-seven per cent of H. pylori-positive patients reported dyspeptic symptoms at 10–14 weeks’ gestation compared with 77% of H. pylori-negative patients, P = 0.95, RR 1.00 (0.89, 1.11). At 30 weeks’ gestation, 86% H. pylori-positive patients reported dyspeptic symptoms compared with 83% of H. pylori-negative patients, P = 0.35, RR 1.04 (0.95, 1.14).
