| Abstract (English): | This article is a reflection on the current state of two historical activities that have always gone hand in hand: collecting and patronage. First, the authors begin with an analysis of what collecting means, the origins of this activity and the motivations that drive collectors to build their collections, recalling some cases of famous historical figures. Then, using some specific examples, they explore in a critical and independent way the differences and meeting points between private and public collections, their evolution, and their function for different types of audiences. Finally, the authors reflect on the current situation of the patronage, its legislation, and the importance of social and institutional recognition of all people who, to this day, remain committed to the defense and promotion of our artistic and historical heritage. | Abstract (Spanish): | Proponemos una reflexión sobre la actualidad de dos actividades históricas que siempre han ido en paralelo: el coleccionismo y el mecenazgo. Partimos de un análisis panorámico sobre qué significa coleccionar, los orígenes de esta actividad y las motivaciones que mueven a los coleccionistas a formar sus colecciones. A través de ejemplos puntuales, exploramos de manera crítica e independiente las diferencias y puntos de contacto entre las colecciones privadas y las públicas, la evolución que siguen desde su gestación, así como sus funciones de cara a las diversas tipologías de público. Por último, reflexionamos sobre la situación actual del mecenazgo, la legislación, y la importancia del reconocimiento social e institucional de todos aquellos que siguen comprometidos en la defensa y promoción de nuestro patrimonio histórico-artístico.
